Sir,

BRITISH CONSULATE GENERAL,

375

HAM BURG.

30th October 1907.

I have the honour to report to you, that the Public Prosecutor attached to the Superior Court of Hamburg (Amtsgericht) has asked me to obtain for him

an answer, at the earliest convenient date, to the following question which has arisen during a trial now pending before the said court, viz: "Whether according to the Customs Laws in force at Hong Kong, a German vessel, visiting that port, or her cargo, is liable to be seized and forfeited in the event of a

member of her Crew, a German by nationality, having without the knowledge of the Master or owner of the

vessel, brought Revolvers and Cartridges on board

for the purpose of taking them to Hong Kong and sell- ing them there without paying the Customs duties due

thereon".

I beg leave, accordingly, to request, that

you will be pleased to inform me what answer should

be given to the above question.

I have the honour to be, with the highest

respect, Sir,

RIGHT HONOURABLE,

SIR EDWARD GREY, BART.,

&c.

ac. &c.

Yours &c.,

(SD) WILLIAM WARD.
